The authors make it very clear that appropriately trained psychologists who follow standardized procedures are able to make valuable contributions in the often-contentious area of custody litigation. They did have to undergo criticism, such as one male friend of the family who took the opportunity to inform Howey's mom that if she had been more feminine he would have had more incentive to stay the way God made him.
Howey has written the story of a family and its members who have gone through enormous changes and have helped each other all they could. He had come to a realization that he was actually a transsexual and not just a transvestite.
