I read it to my 2nd Grade class during our Life Cycles unit on Trees. It's just that elephants are so big and his trunk swings so widely .
The boy's grandma and grandpa seem rather skeptical of his elephant explanation. However, the author goes through endless descriptions of the horrors of WWI (my husband's grandfather fought there), and I have read enough of the dark history and seen movies to know how horrible it was. I have spent the last two months reading this book. The IAS Manual removes the mystery and uncertainty from what would typically be a rather difficult task - deciding whether or not to whole-grade accelerate a child in school.
I highly recommend the IAS for any and all parents and educators who find themselves faced with the incredible task of trying to decide how best to meet the educational needs of a bright or gifted child. Best music ever!!!! Ke
